What is Cataracts?

Cataract can be defined as an eye disease in which the lens of the eye is cloudy causing a blurred vision.

Whenever a cataracts patient views any object it looks as if there is frost i.e as the moisture that usually drops early in the morning during harmattan period making it difficult for the sufferer to detect the real nature of objects or anything that he or she views.

Formation of Cataracts

Cataract is formed in the lens behind the IRIS. The iris is the coloured part of the eye.

The lens behind the iris focuses the light that is passed into the eye which enables the retina to produce clear and sharp images. The retina is a membrane in the eye which helps to detect the light that passes into the eye.

As one increases in age, the lenses becomes thicker, less flexible as well as less transparent. Increase in age will cause the eye tissue to break down and stick to each other causing blockage to areas in the lens.

As one ages, the blockage gets wider and cover a larger part in the lens when this happens the light that passes into the eye can no longer penetrate to reach the retina resulting in a blurred image.

Types of Cataracts

  1. Nuclear Cataracts: Nuclear cataracts is the type of cataract that affects the centre of the lens.it can cause nearsightedness. At the initial stage of a nuclear cataract it can be manageable but as time goes on it causes more effects. The lens turns yellow as time goes on it turns brown which can lead to inability to detect colour.
  1. Posterior subcapsular cataracts: from the name posterior, it is the type of cataract that affects the back part of the lens. It begins small in an opaque area at the back of the lens in the path where light travels into the eye. It then causes interference to bright light and causes glare and halos around light at night.
  1. Cortical cataracts: cortical cataract is a type of cataract the affects the edges of the lens and as time goes on it extends to the centre of the lens causing an interference with the light what passes into the eye.
  1. Congenital cataracts: this type of cataract happens in people that were born with the disease. It is usually as a result of genes or trauma.

Causes of Cataracts

The causes of cataract differs from person to person

  1. Cataract can develop as a result of increase in age or injuries that causes damage to the tissue that makes up the eye lens.
  2. Exposure of the eye to hazardous chemical.
  3. Cataract can also be caused from the effect of an existing disease such as diabetes.
  4. It can also be caused by the use of some steroid medications fr a long time

What Are the Factors That Triggers the Risk of Cataracts

  • Drinking too much of alcohol also increases the risk of cataract
  • High blood pressure can also trigger the risk of cataracts
  • Corticosteroid: corticosteroid are medicines that are used to provide relief from inflammatory infections example are bethamethasone (celestone), prednisolone (orapred Prelone), prednisone (Prednisone Intensole), triamcinolone ( Aristopan Intra-Articular, Aristopan Intralesional, Kenalog and Methyl prednisolone (Medrol, Depo-Medrol, Solu-Medrol).
